Trolley Transportation History

The first trolleybuses originated in Germany and date back to 1882, just one year after Mountain Lake Park was founded. As a form of public transportation, electric trolleys became synonymous with cities like Pittsburgh and San Francisco. The wheeled model pictured above provides all the charm of nostalgic public transportation without the limits of a rail system.

Generous donations came rolling in to help purchase the vintage-style Trolley making Mountain Lake Park, the envy of Garrett County. Imagine being transported during The Victorian Chautauqua Historic Home Tours, shuttled to the fireworks at Broadford Lake, to Oakland for the Autumn Glory Festival, or to the Farmers Market to get local produce. Public transportation is good for the environment and tons of fun for individuals, families, and groups. There are so many uses that the Trolley has become a point of pride for Mountain Lake Park residents.

The Trolley seats 24 passengers and has rear flaps that open for a full view and fresh air. The classic design features decorative arched windows, bay rear seating, wooden benches, standing handrails, and an arched wooden ceiling with a traditional clerestory roof. It has been well maintained and is in excellent working order. A restoration includes wrapping the lower portion of the exterior with a customized theme for Mountain Lake Park. A newly purchased audio system for tour guides ensures all the riders can hear with ease.
