Writers’ Workshop Meet & Greet

Thursday, April 21 at 7:30 PM

Sponsored by Landon’s Library, Friends of Ruth Enlow Library, and The Garrett County Arts Council $SMART ART Classroom.

If you would like to meet the instructors for the upcoming Victorian Chautauqua Writers’ Workshop series, a special online session will address questions about creative writing, poetry, playwriting, songwriting, children’s literature, and workshops for students grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. Adults, teens, and parents can all participate. The webinar will also be broadcast on Facebook Live, but viewers must register in advance to join the live webinar event. A recorded version will remain on Facebook for later viewing.

Anyone who enjoys writing will have the perfect opportunity to hear directly from the instructors and ask any questions in real time before registering. You will learn what to expect and whether the workshop is right for you.

Meet The Instructors

Ashley Belote (Adults)

Learn the Craft and Write a Draft: The Nuts & Bolts of Picture Books

The goal of Ashely Belote's course is to learn about the craft of picture book writing and illustrating. Each workshop participant will actively be working on a manuscript that will move from an idea to a draft throughout the week.

Sponsored by Landon’s Library

A.J. DeLauder (Teens and Adults)

Playwriting

If you’ve ever dreamed of telling a story for the stage, A.J. DeLauder will help you turn an idea into a living, breathing performative work. You will learn how to turn words into a place wrapped in emotion and narrative that moves audiences as the story unfolds.

Jack DeBose (Adults)

Poetry

This workshop will demonstrate the forms poetry can take, and invite students to learn how to put their ideas, emotions, and beliefs into language that demonstrates their full value.

Mary McEwen & Michael McEwen (Teens Grades 8-12)

Teen Creative Writing: The Story of Nature

Back for a second year, Mary and Michael McEwen, a mother-and-son team, are ready to lead another creative writing course for teens that focuses on nature.

Kimberly Weimer (Grades 6-8)

Children’s Writing: Youth Workshop

Children who enjoy creative writing rarely have time throughout the school year to express themselves freely. Unbound by the rigors of structured language arts, this workshop provides a supportive atmosphere for young writers to stretch their wings.

Danielle Hazelwood (Grades 3-5)

Children’s Writing: Youth Workshop

Among other tools, Danielle uses book series such as Magic Tree House to develop a love of reading and writing. Students can use literature to get their creative juices flowing for their own stories.

Philip Gerard (Adults 18 and up)

Songwriting

Participants will be introduced to the basic elements of songs: melody intervals, tempo, rhythm, verse, chorus, bridge, lyrics, and phrasing. Philip demonstrates some useful methods: top-down, “shadow” or “scaffold,” narrative, melodic, and organic. (They may sound mysterious, but all are relatively simple, proven ways to create a song.)
