Roadside Marker Dedication

Ruhl Cottage

A quiet, country home becomes an important suffrage landmark.

Julia Walker Ruhl

[1861 - 1956]

The successful passing of the 19th Amendment granting equal voting rights for women celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020. This celebration continues on July 10, 2022, as the Maryland Women's Heritage Center and the William G. Pomeroy Foundation dedicate their 10th roadside marker in Maryland to Julia Walker Ruhl, a notable Mountain Lake Park resident, and suffragist. As part of the National Votes For Women Trail, Ruhl Cottage, where Julia spent her summers, will become a reminder of a social shift that changed the future for American women.

A special dedication ceremony and marker unveiling will take place at 105 G Street during the Victorian Chautauqua on Sunday, July 10 at 4:00 PM. The public is invited to attend. The program will gather representatives from across the state to recognize Julia for her important contributions to the women’s movement. It will also follow a presentation by Sallie Wooddell Stuart who will be portraying Julia Walker Ruhl under the Burlington Tent at 3:00 PM. Leading up to this momentous occasion Stuart will paint a picture of Julia’s influence on the Suffrage movement and her love of the mountaintop Chautauqua resort that became her second home.

A limited-edition commemorative program will be available for the first to arrive.

After the ceremony, the Wooddell Family will hold a private reception for the supporting organizations.
